  • What is the survey about and what is its purpose?
    With SEP, we are collecting data on how firms adjust internal processes in response to the implementation of digital technologies and on how digital transformation affects the relationship between firms and their employees. Answers to these issues allow us to examine the technology-driven changes in labour demand and employment relationships as well as the firms’ coping strategies and performance effects resulting from digital transformation. The annual employer survey will be conducted over a period of four years from 2021 to 2024 across Switzerland and form a panel data set.
  • What is asked in the survey?
    Firms are surveyed regarding their experiences with and responses to digital transformation, including changes in workforce structure, work organization, hiring behavior, further training offers, compensation systems, investments, and corporate culture.

  • How long does this survey take?
    Answering the questions takes about 15 minutes. A green check mark in the table of contents only means that you already viewed the questions but not necessarily that you have already answered all of them.
  • What kind of device should be used to complete the survey?
    We recommend that you take the survey on a computer or laptop and not on a mobile phone.
  • Do I have to participate in the survey?
    Participation in the survey is not mandatory. However, the survey is a very important data basis for the development of adaption strategies in regard to changes related to digitization. In order to draw representative conclusions from the survey, your answers are significant.
  • How is my data protected?
    Data protection is guaranteed. The data will be evaluated by researchers at the University of Basel only for scientific purposes. The resulting data set will be pseudonymized. Thus, the evaluating researchers only see a code instead of personalized information, which does not allow them to draw any conclusions about your specific establishment. The results will be published as project reports on the project homepage ( Additionally, workshops will be offered to interested parties about which information are provided on the homepage as well. Should external scientists wish to work with these data in a follow-up project, it is also guaranteed that these evaluations serve exclusively scientific purposes and that the anonymity of the survey participants is guaranteed in any case. Your participation in this research project is voluntary. You have the right to withdraw from participation at any time.

  • Can I take a break while I fill out the survey?
    In general, you are able to close and continue the survey by re-entering the link that brought you to this page. Since the survey progress is saved by placing a cookie in your internet browser, this is, however, only possible on the same device with the same internet browser and if you have not deleted the cookies in the meantime. However, it is only possible to return to the survey this way if you have not yet concluded it

  • In which languages can I fill out the survey?
    You can answer the survey in German, English, French, or Italian. The language can be changed directly in Qualtrics during the survey. This is possible through a dropdown menu, which is displayed at the top right of the page.
